Thy Word Is A Lamp

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path (Psalm 119:105).

Bible Reading

Psalm 119:97-112:

97O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.
98Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.
99I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.
100I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.
101I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.
102I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.
103How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.
105Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
106I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.
107I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word.
108Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments.
109My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not forget thy law.
110The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts.
111Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.
112I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.

Devotional

God has spoken to us. He might have kept silent, and then what would have become of us? He has spoken to us of God's infinite love in Christ Jesus. He has told us that "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." He told us that, "God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them." He has told us that, "of him ye are in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption."

This word of truth is a lamp unto our feet, a light unto our path. John tells us, "In him (Christ) was life, and the life was the light of men." He said, "I am the light of the world." Outside of him all is darkness but the light shineth in the darkness. We are on our journey from earth to heaven. We are pilgrims and strangers on the earth. The way may lead through dark valleys, but "unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness." Jesus says, "He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." Therefore, "Come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord."

Prayer

Our Father, we thank Thee, that Thou hast commanded the light to shine out of darkness, and that Thou hast also shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Enlighten the eyes of our understanding, that we may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, which He wrought in Christ when He raised him from the dead. O God, continue to bless us through him, and for his sake. Amen.
