To the law and to the testimony; if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them (Isaiah 8:20)
Bible Reading
Psalm 19:Devotional
Christ alone is the light of the world, not a light, but the light. "In him was life, and the life was the light of men." Christ is the Word that was in the beginning with God. Christ is revealed unto us in the Bible, the written Word of God. Thus God's word, as revealed in the Bible, is a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path. And because believers have the Word of God dwelling in them, which they proclaim to others, they are the light of the world. "The entrance of Thy words giveth light."
This light hath appeared unto "them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death;" but "men loved darkness rather than light." "This is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil." And so they grope in the dark without light. And outer darkness awaits them, unless they give heed to the Word of God.
There is no light in them. The Hebrew has it: There is no morning for them. How terrible that must be — everlasting night! But "The Sun of Righteousness has arisen with healing in his wings." Christ is still the light of the world, and they that follow him, shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. "And they shall walk in the light of the city of God."
Prayer
Gracious God, our heavenly Father, we thank Thee for Thy Word, through which we have light and life. Help us to walk in Thy truth from day to day to the honor and glory of Thy name. May we let our light so shine before men, that they may see our good works, and glorify Thee our Father who art in heaven. Amen.
