Psalm 40:1-11:

¹I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
²He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
³And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
⁴Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
⁵Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
⁶Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
⁷Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,
⁸I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.
⁹I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.
¹⁰I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.
¹¹Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.

Devotional

God from all eternity determined to save his people from sin and from death, and to bestow upon them eternal life. As soon as Adam and Eve had sinned, God came to them with the promise of salvation. He promised them that the seed of the woman should bruise the serpent's head. And the promises of the coming Redeemer ran through the whole Old Testament. The promises of eternal life are sure; for God is a God that cannot lie. "God is not a man, that he shall lie; neither the son of man, that he shall repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?" When the children of Israel had come into the land of Canaan, the promised land, we read: "There failed not aught of any good things which the Lord had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass." We read of Abraham, when he had received the promise of a son in his old age: "He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; and being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform." So also with all the promises concerning our Saviour Jesus Christ. They all were sure, also the one concerning the virgin birth. "She shall bring forth a son, and thou shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." We read, "Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which, being interpreted is, God with us."

Prayer

Our heavenly Father we thank Thee for Thy prec­ious promises, which are all yea and Amen in Christ Jesus. Help us to believe them, and thus may we have the assurance of eternal life. For Jesus' sake. Amen.
