Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5).

Psalm 37:1-11:Devotional
The psalmist says, "For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace." Does it not seem as if the arrogant, the self-assertive, come into possession of large parts of the earth? Have not the dictators arrogated power and possessions unto themselves by force? Yes, but how long did they keep their possessions? It is only a little while, and the wicked shall not be. "Evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth." Surely Abraham waited upon the Lord. He let Lot choose. Lot chose for himself the rich plain of Jordan. Abraham let God choose. After Lot had chosen all the plain of Jordan, "the Lord said to Abraham, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: for all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever." The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever. The promise to Abraham, that he should be the heir of the world, was through the righteousness of faith. All who are Christ's are Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise. Paul says, "All things are yours; whether .... the world, or life or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours." We read in Revelation: "He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son." "If we are children, then are we heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ." It follows that all these promises are applicable to the meek.
Prayer
O God, our Father, teach us to be truly humble. May we look to Jesus as our example and learn of him, for He is meek and lowly in heart. Remove from us all pride and arrogance. May we walk before Thee in meekness, and help us to serve Thee with an eye single to Thy glory. May we delight ourselves in the abundance of peace as we sojourn here below. And may our end be peace. Pardon our sins. We ask it in Jesus' name and for his sake. Amen.
