Life and Light

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

In him was life; and the life was the light of men (John 1:4).

Bible Reading

John 1:1-14:

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2The same was in the beginning with God.
3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Devotional

Of all the sons and daughters of Adam, with One exception, it must be said, "In them was death," that is, death reigned over them. The exception is Jesus Christ, born of the virgin Mary. In him was life. "For as the Father hath life in himself; so has he given to the Son to have life in himself." "God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him." "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life." Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life." Paul said, "I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me." "When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

"And the life was the light of men." Christ is the light of the world, the Sun of righteousness, with healing in his wings. "The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up." "The true light now shineth." "Walk while ye have light . . . that ye may be the children of light."

Prayer

Our Father, we thank Thee that Jesus Christ conquered death, that He brought life and immortality to light; that he who believes on the Son has everlasting life. Help us to realize that we do not have this life in ourselves, but in Christ; that we live, yet not we, but Christ lives in us. Teach us that this life in Christ is the light of men; that this is the true light which now shineth upon those who sit in the region and shadow of death. Cause many to come to the light, that they may be children of light. Amen.
