the Rev. Henry Huenemann
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust (Psalm 91:1, 2).

Psalm 91:Devotional
The enemies of the believers are many and mighty. The psalmist says: "Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High. Every day they wrest my words: all their thoughts are against me for evil." But the Lord will not give them into the enemies' hands, but will deliver them. "He preserveth the souls of his saints: he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked." "The Lord shall swallow them up in his wrath." "He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up." He saves and protects all his children. He keeps them safe in his secret place, where the enemies cannot get at them. "He hides them under the shadow of his wings." They dwell there in safety. "The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it and is safe (Hebrew, is set aloft)." He can say: "In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me." God himself is his refuge. That refuge is safe and secure. God himself is his fortress. That fortress shall never be stormed. He "trusts in the mercy of God for ever and ever," and the Lord will "keep him in perfect peace." His mind is stayed on him, because he trusts in him.
Prayer
O Lord, our God, we in ourselves are weak and helpless. We cannot conquer our mighty enemies in our own strength, nor can we defend ourselves against them. We pray Thee, be Thou our Helper, Defender and strong Deliverer. Be pleased to preserve aud strengthen us by the power of Thy Holy Spirit, that we may make firm stand against them, and not sink in this spiritual war, until we come off at last with complete victory. Help us to realize, that in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength. And Thine be the glory. Amen.
