Morning Thoughts for Today;
or, Daily Walking with God

Octavius Winslow, 1856 (edited for
today's reader by Larry E. Wilson, 2010)

Bible Verse

"For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed" (Mal. 3:6).

Devotional

It is no small attainment to be built up in the faithfulness of God. This forms a lasting foundation of comfort for the believing soul. Changeability marks everything outside of God. Look into the church, into the world, into your family, into yourself—what innumerable changes you see on every hand! A week, one short day, what alterations it produces!

Yet, in the midst of all this change, to rest calmly on the unchangeableness of God, the faithfulness of God. To know that no alterations of time, no earthly changes, affect his faithfulness to his people. And more than this—no changes in them, no unfaithfulness of theirs, causes the slightest change in God. Once a Father, always a Father; once a Friend, always a Friend. His providences may change, his heart cannot. He is a God of unchangeable love. The promise he has given, he will fulfill. The covenant he has made, he will observe. The word that has gone out of his mouth, he will not alter "for he cannot deny himself" (2 Tim. 2:13).

Be at peace then, O tried believer! Are you now passing through the deep waters? Who kept you from sinking when wading through the last? Who brought you through the last fire? Who supported you under the last cross? Who delivered you out of the last temptation? Was it not God? Was it not your covenant God? Was it not your faithful, unchangeable God? This God, then, is your God now, and he will be your God forever and ever, And he will be your guide even to and through death.

"Great is thy faithfulness"
