Twilight: A Prophet's Testimony

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

In March we read the gospel of John. John wrote his gospel so that his readers would know and believe the claims of Jesus. Those who do have everlasting life here and now.

Bible Reading:

John 1:29–34

Bible Text:

"Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29).

Devotional:

The John spoken of in this passage is John the Baptist or Baptizer. He is not the same John who wrote the gospel. This John was a prophet, the last one before the coming of the Messiah.

All of Israel's prophets foretold the coming of the Messiah. As the last in a long line of prophets, John stretched out his hand, pointed at Jesus, and said, "Look, the Lamb of God." John saw the one for whom all prophets had hoped.

However, the Messiah did not come as a victorious general, a military liberator, as most people had expected. When God finally presented Jesus, the Messiah, John the Baptist said he was a Lamb that God prepared as a sacrifice to take away the world's sin.

All Israelites knew about the presentation of animals as a sacrifice for sin. People would bring an animal to the temple, lay their hands on its head, and confess their sins. Then the animal was slaughtered, and God would accept the sacrifice as payment for the people's sin. When a lamb was sacrificed, the sins of the people were taken away.

"Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"

John the Baptist says that God presents Jesus as the final sacrifice for the sin of the whole world. If we want to claim his sacrifice, we must lay our hands on the Lamb and confess our sins. Do it now. Confess your sins. Believe that Jesus is God's Lamb for the sin of the world.
