March 18 Daily Devotional

Twilight: God in Him and He in Us

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

In March we read the gospel of John. John wrote his gospel so that his readers would know and believe the claims of Jesus. Those who do have everlasting life here and now.

Bible Reading:

John 14:8–14

Bible Text:

"You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it" (John 14:14).

Devotional:

Jesus came to reveal his Father and to bring us the life of God. But even his disciples were slow learners.

"Show us the Father," said Philip. He still did not understand that to know the Son is to know the Father.

"Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father," Jesus said.

Then Jesus explained what life would be like for his disciples after he returned to the Father: "Just as the life of the Father is in me," he said, "so will my power be in my disciples." There will be such an intimate connection between the Son and his followers that the works of the Son will be carried out by his disciples.

"You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."

Ask in the name of Jesus. That does not merely mean that at the end of our prayers we say, "In Jesus' name" or "For Jesus' sake." But we ask as people who are related to Jesus—who have the mind of Christ and the mission of the Master.

As a citizen of your country, you have certain privileges. You have the right to demand protection and assistance from your government. And as one who bears your family's name, you may sometimes speak or act on behalf of the clan. It is in this sense—as a member of the family of God—that we pray in Jesus' name.

"Ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it." Let all Christ's disciples take this word seriously. And they will change the world.
