Twilight: Setting Things Straight

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

Isaiah's God is the Holy One of Israel. In God's presence we have to be morally clean. God has chosen his Servant, who will rule in righteousness in a kingdom of peace.

Bible Reading:

Isaiah 32:1–8

Bible Text:

See, a king will reign in righteousness.... No longer will the fool be called noble (Isa. 32:1, 5).

Devotional:

Here's another prophecy about the righteous king. Under his rule the poor will be protected. Reliable people will be prominent in society (v. 2), and the country will no longer be run by fools (vv. 5–8).

As a rule, when Isaiah speaks of the righteous king, he has his prophetic eye on the Messiah, whom we know as Jesus. Jesus is the righteous king, and his kingdom comes in the field of the world where the seed of the Word is sown and the breath of the Spirit gives new life.

The kingdom has come, and it is coming. When we pray today "Your kingdom come!" we ask to see the full and final establishment of the new society. We pray for the coming of the king himself.

Meanwhile we have work to do. While the Lord restores his kingship in this world, he assigns some tasks to us. We have a humble role: we pray, and we do deeds of love and mercy. But, wherever God gives us opportunity, we also have a political role. Since our hearts are set on the coming of the righteous king, we devote our lives to a struggle for righteousness. We don't simply sit and wait.

There's nothing worse for a country than to have fools in high places. When government is characterized by injustice and crass stupidity, we must do our utmost to set things straight.

For we are the servants of the righteous king.
