For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee (Isaiah 54:10).
Bible Reading
Isaiah 54:1-10:Devotional
God is gracious and merciful. He has loved us with an everlasting love. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." He has made a covenant of peace with us. And this covenant is an everlasting covenant. It stands firm. Nothing can destroy it. God's loving-kindness shall never depart from us. It stands firmer than the everlasting hills. Is there any thing on earth that stands firmer than the mountains? Their foundations are laid deep down in the earth, and they reach thousands of feet into the sky. Things round about them are changeable and they perish. The centuries come and go. One generation follows another, but the mountains remain. There they stand in all their majesty, silent witnesses to God's might and faithfulness. Yet, even they shall depart. But God's faithfulness and loving kindness shall abide for ever and ever.
What a comfort to the children of God! If our salvation depended on the faithfulness of man, there would be no hope for us. But God is unchangeable, and his Word abides for ever. "For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." So in all our trials, temptations, and sorrows, and even in the hour of death, we may be assured that God's grace is sufficient for us. The Lord that has mercy on us, hath spoken it.
Prayer
Eternal God and Father, we thank Thee that Thou hast made an everlasting covenant of grace with us and with our children. If our salvation depended on our faithfulness, we would be lost for ever. But Thou art faithful, and Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and for ever. So we rest in Thee. For Jesus' sake. Amen.
Scripture in Devotional: Jer. 31:3; Rom. 5:8; Gen. 49:26; Mal. 3:6; 2 Cor. 12:9.
