August 6 Today in OPC History

Irvine, California

On the Lord's Day of August 6, 1978, worship services began in Irvine, California, for Church of the Servant Orthodox Presbyterian Church. Licentiate Jack Smith preached and his wife, Deborah, played the piano for those gathered that morning at University Park Community Center in Irvine. Three years later, Mr. Smith would be ordained and installed as an associate pastor of Garden Grove OPC laboring at the Irvine mission. On May 5, 1985, he was installed as the pastor of Church of the Servant.

Church of the Servant would change its name to Trinity OPC in 1991. After fifteen years of gospel witness in Irvine, Trinity OPC closed on June 30, 1993. In 1995, Mr. Smith would be called as pastor to First OPC, Portland, Oregon, where he served faithfully until his retirement at the end of 2019.
