Monthly Theme:
Elijah's name is his mission: "My God is the LORD." Elijah teaches us the meaning of repentance by the removal of idolatry. Unless we obey the Word, God's blessings don't descend. Instead, the land will experience a terrible drought.
Bible Reading:
1 Kings 18:7–15
Bible Text:
"As the LORD Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today" (1 Kings 18:15).
Devotional:
This used to be God's country. Now it is occupied by the demons of the false religion. The country looks like the badlands on which God has turned his back. Jezebel has killed God's prophets (vv. 4, 13). And Ahab has searched far and wide for Elijah, his greatest enemy and most coveted prey. But Ahab's special envoys have failed to find a clue as to Elijah's whereabouts.
Suddenly Elijah appears in northern Israel and tells Obadiah to bring Ahab to him.
Obadiah is shocked. "Is it really you?"
"Yes. Go tell your master, 'Elijah is here.'"
But Obadiah is worried: If he leaves to tell Ahab that Elijah is here, the Spirit of the LORD might carry Elijah away. And if Ahab "does not find you he will kill me." Obadiah is secretly on the LORD'S side—he has saved a hundred prophets from Jezebel's holocaust. Therefore he begs Elijah, "Don't give Ahab an excuse to kill me."
Elijah swears an oath. Persuaded, Obadiah goes to arrange the confrontation between the evil king and the LORD'S prophet. And Elijah waits without fear because he lives with God.
Why should we be afraid of anything or anyone if we walk with the God of the universe?
