March 5 Daily Devotional

Twilight: Thirst Quencher

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

In March we read the gospel of John. John wrote his gospel so that his readers would know and believe the claims of Jesus. Those who do have everlasting life here and now.

Bible Reading:

John 4:7–18

Bible Text:

"Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst" (John 4:14).

Devotional:

At first the Lord simply asked the woman for a drink of water. Then he steered their conversation to the real issue: What is the gift that quenches the deepest human thirst?

This woman was no stranger to thirst. She had been divorced five times and was living with a boyfriend when she met Jesus.

All of us are born thirsty. No one should be ashamed of deep desires and unfulfilled cravings. In some religions the gurus or teachers claim they can help their followers rid themselves of their desires. But the Christian religion makes no such claims. While it forbids us to seek illegitimate fulfillment of our desires, it promises ultimate fulfillment when God is all in all.

All people are thirsty until God fills their cravings. "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again," Jesus said to the woman. Nothing and no one in this world can fill the vacuum in our life and quench our deepest thirst. No one except Jesus, who can quench our thirst forever.

Jesus comes from God. He is the Son of God. And he brings us life from the Father if we receive him by faith. Elsewhere in the Bible this life is called the Holy Spirit.

We need not go through life dizzily darting from one thirst quencher to another. Be still, and drink the living water.
