Twilight: The New Creation

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the beginning of a new life for all believers. It's also the pledge of our resurrection (1 Cor. 15). The study of Colossians is part of this month's meditations on the meaning of the resurrection.

Bible Reading:

1 Corinthians 15:20–28

Bible Text:

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive (1 Cor. 15:22).

Devotional:

The acts of one person may affect the lot of many—to what extent depends on the person's position. Parents' actions influence the lives of their children, for better or for worse, and the acts of presidents and prime ministers may affect millions. Our scope of influence depends on our position.

One position in human history stands out as unique—that of the father of the human race. Adam's acts had a far wider influence than the acts of his children. His disobedience released the power of death, and death became king over all humankind.

The greatest thing that has happened to us since Adam's fall is Christ's birth on earth. He appeared as the "last Adam," as a representative of us all. Therefore his acts have an influence as wide as the human race.

The actions of a parent may ruin or save a family. The deeds of a governor may destroy or rescue a country. The acts of Christ were the turning point for the human race.

By his obedience, Christ released the power of life. Because he holds the position of greatest influence, he has placed us under God's favor and exposed us to the power of the age to come. The life of the new creation is stronger than the death of the old. Wait and see.
