Twilight: This Life Is Only the Beginning

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

These meditations are on the psalms. All those songs about Zion, the temple, and the Son of David really make sense when they are sung In the New Testament church.

Bible Reading:

Psalm 73:13–28

Bible Text:

Yet I am always with you.... You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory (Ps. 73:23–24).

Devotional:

The revelation of the Bible is the truth on which we "bet our lives." But what if it isn't true?

Several saints of God have played with this idea, and Asaph, the author of Psalm 73, was one of them. Paul once said that if we live by hope in the resurrection and then it turns out that Christ was not raised, "we are to be pitied more than all men" (1 Cor. 15:19).

When we face such questions, we can find reasonable arguments to get us back on our feet. Yet it is not human reason but an encounter with God that renews our faith. For Asaph it happened "in the sanctuary of God." There he must have seen something of the Eternal One. With great force it struck him that there is indeed life after death. Suddenly he perceived that the smooth operators of this world are on a slippery slope. More importantly, he realized he was living only in the vestibule of a grand house that must yet be discovered.

"I am always with you," Asaph said to God—not because I am so strong but because "you hold me by my right hand." From stage to stage you lead me. "You guide me with your counsel." You will show me the way and open the doors. "And afterward you will take me into glory."
