Monthly Theme:
These meditations are on the psalms. All those songs about Zion, the temple, and the Son of David really make sense when they are sung In the New Testament church.
Bible Reading:
Psalm 98
Bible Text:
Sing to the LORD a new song ... all the earth ... rivers ... mountains.... For he comes... (Ps. 98:1, 3, 8, 9).
Devotional:
This psalm gives us the kind of vision that all of us should pray for at least once a week.
The end is in sight. God is coming. The conductor of the universal choir raises the baton. The bride walks in, and the bridegroom greets her. Now it begins: the whole earth bursts into jubilant song, accompanied by a symphony of purest music. The sea resounds, playing percussion in this cosmic song of welcome. The everlasting mountains can no longer sit still. Their arms stretch to heaven, their mouths sing for joy. And the rivers forget that they may not leave their banks. They clap their silver hands to underscore the hymn of all creation. "Let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge ... the world in righteousness" (v. 9).
It is a new song. "Sing to the LORD a new song," because "all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God" (v. 3).
This new song is different from the ongoing song of praise that creation sings to its Lord and Maker. All nature sings that song. Birds sing it and the mouths of infants sing it too. But this new song is sung when God performs a saving act of grace. New deliverance brings a new song.
And the final deliverance, when all things and all of us are made new, will bring an unsurpassable song to the planet, outshining any former composition.
And you and I will sing our hearts out.
