But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth (Psalm 86:15).
Bible Reading
Psalm 86:Devotional
"It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." "The Lord is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.
He revealed his great mercy in his Son Jesus Christ. Christ had compassion with those who were in physical need and disĀtress. When great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed and many others, he healed them. And when the multitude "saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk and the blind to see," they wondered, and glorified the God of Israel. And when the multitude had continued with him three days, and had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him and said, "I have compassion on the multitude." And he fed them with seven loaves and a few little fishes which the disciples had with them. And when they had eaten and were filled, they took up seven baskets full of broken pieces of food that were left. "And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children."
But the most marvelous compassion did Christ show to poor and lost sinners. He suffered and died that they might live. "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." Where sin abounded, there grace did much more abound.
Marvelous grace, infinite grace,
Grace to cover all my sin."
Prayer
Most merciful God and Father, we thank Thee that Thou art merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth; keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin; but Thou wilt by no means clear the guilty. May we with a penitent heart confess our sins, and receive forgiveness. May the righteous be glad in the Lord, and trust in him; and may all the upright in heart glory. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
