the Rev. Henry Huenemann
Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation (Psalm 62:1).
Bible Reading
Psalm 62:Devotional
The Hebrew reads, My soul is silent; the German, My soul is still to God. God is sovereign. "The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works." "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" "God is the Judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another." What is man that he should rebel or speak against God, or even be displeased with his ways? Not in rebellion, but in submission lies our happiness. "For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength." We must look to him in quietness and confidence. "The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy." His eye is upon them "to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine." Oh, may we say with the psalmist: "Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee." From him alone comes our salvation.
The German poet, Karl Gerok, wrote:
To God thy soul be still, and ever
Content be with his plan and will.
May nothing from his will thee sever,
And all to thy good will be still.
He, who for him has chosen thee
Knows best what's good. So let it be.
Prayer
Our Father in heaven, we thank Thee that we know that Thou lovest us, and that we are in Thy care. And, being in Thy care, nothing can harm us. All must work together for our good. When our way leads through dark valleys, free us from all fear, and grant us a childlike trust. And may the peace of God that passes all understanding, keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. In his name we pray. Amen.
