March 27 Daily Devotional

Twilight: Finished!

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

In March we read the gospel of John. John wrote his gospel so that his readers would know and believe the claims of Jesus. Those who do have everlasting life here and now.

Bible Reading:

John 19:28–37

Bible Text:

When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished" (John 19:30).

Devotional:

"Finished." This was Jesus' sigh of relief and statement of triumph. When he said it, his mission had not yet been fully accomplished. In fact, Christ is still busy today completing his mission for the redemption of the world. Soon he will come again and cry a second time, "Finished!" Then all knees will bow before him and his Father.

Although Christ's mission wasn't fully accomplished, his suffering was over. When Christ uttered this cry, the price had been paid in full. His atoning sacrifice was on the altar. God's justice required that our sins be punished, and as our representative, Jesus Christ bore the punishment in our place.

The way to God is now open. The curtain to the holiest place has been torn in two. Jesus is the way to God—to the depths of burning light and to the heart of the Father. Because of Jesus' atoning death, anyone may approach God's throne to receive acceptance and blessing.

No more must we hear the cry of sacrificial lambs, for enough blood has dripped from the world's altars. On the final altar, the Lamb of God took away the sins of the world. "Praise the LORD, 0 my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name" (Ps. 103:1).
