September 27 Today in OPC History

Jocilyn Engbers Warren was born on this day in 1937. Her parents, members of the Christian Reformed Church in Michigan, were committed to the Reformed faith and Christian Eduction. Jocilyn attended Calvin College and after graduation accepted a teaching position in Philadelphia at the Willow Grove Christian Day School (now Phil-mont Christian Academy). There she was introduced to the Orthodox Presbyterian Church as she attended Calvary OPC, Glenside. It was at a Sunday evening hymn-sing that she met her future husband, Bill Warren, who was studying at Westminster Theological Seminary. They were married on June 22, 1963. Bill would pastor churches in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, General Synod, and the Reformed Church in the United States before transferring to the OPC in 1972 to pastor Westminster OPC in Valdosta, Georgia. In 1980, Bill accepted the call to pastor Garden Grove OPC in Garden Grove, California. At Garden Grove, Jocilyn threw herself into the work of starting and maintaining a Christian school for the covenant children. She served as principal and teacher for a decade passing on to her students the wisdom of the Apostle from Colossians 3:22, that they should not aim to be people pleasers, but with sincerity of heart that they should obey and fear the Lord. On September 21, 2016, Jocilyn died and went to be with the Lord in heaven.
