Thirty-Fourth (1967) General Assembly

2023

At 9:00 AM on this day in 1967, Ruling Elder Richard A. Barker, Moderator of the Thirty-Third General Assembly, called to order the Thirty-Fourth General Assembly meeting at Long Beach, California. Mr. Barker constituted the meeting with a worship service in which he delivered an address on the subject, “Aspects of the Subject of Church Discipline” from Hebrews 10: 19-25. Later in the morning, Statistician Edward Haug reported that there were 13,579 members in 106 OPC congregations. Noting that nearly 35% of the total membership was baptized children, he added that proper instruction in the distinctive witness of the OPC was clearly important when one realizes that some 4,800 young people have the potential for relocation during college years and subsequent family life. Following Mr. Haug's report, the Rev. Henry W. Coray, the first pastor of the host church, Faith OPC, Long Beach, was elected as moderator.
