On April 5, 1940, approximately 150 young people from various parts of New England gathered at Carlisle, Massachusetts, for a supper and rally in connection with the annual Bible Conference for young people held at Deerwander Lodge, West Hollis, Maine. Supper was served by the host church of which the Rev. Burton L. Goddard was pastor.
The evening program included music by a string band, violin numbers, a piano solo and a vocal duet. “Get-acquainted” talks from OPC pastors and members included: “Deerwander and Nature,” by the Rev. Arthur Olson, Portland, Maine, “Deerwander and the Bible,” by the Rev. Dean Adair, Cumberland Center, Maine, “Deerwander and Scholarship” by the Rev. Daniel Van Houte, Ph.D., Pownal, Maine, “Deerwander and New England,” by Mr. Charles Stanton, Canaan, Maine, “Deerwander and Fellowship,” by Miss Esther Hempel, Lawrence, Massachusetts, “Deerwander and Music,” by the Rev. Lawrence Eyres, Deerfield, New Hampshire, “Deerwander and Recreation,” by the Rev. Martin Bohn, Steuben, Maine, and “Deerwander and the Future,” by Rev. Goddard.
