August 9 Today in OPC History

Elmer Dortzbach

 

On August 9, 1922, Elmer Dortzbach was born in Kariuzawa, Japan. He earned a diploma from Moody Bible Institute in 1942 and married Majorie Norton in 1944. Elmer and Marjorie were blessed with three children, Jeanette, future OPC pastor Karl, and Karen. Elmer held degrees from Wheaton College (B.S.,1946), Westminster Theological Seminary (M.Div.,1949 and Th.M., 1950), and the University of Colorado (Ph.D., 1976). He was ordained to gospel ministry in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church in 1952 and installed as pastor of Franklin Square OPC in Franklin Square, New York. He also served as pastor of Park Hill OPC in Denver (1956-1967) and at Redeemer OPC in Atlanta (1973-1976). From 1977 to 1984, he served as professor of pastoral care at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi. He died and went to be with the Lord in Glory in 2012 at the age of eighty.
