Charles and Ruth Schauffele

2022

On this day in 1939, Charles G. Schauffele and Ruth Kellogg were united in marriage. Having graduated from Wheaton College and Westminster Seminary, Schauffele pastored Orthodox Presbyterian congregations in Pennsylvania and California before joining the faculty of Gordon Divinity School (later Gordon-Conwell Seminary) in 1949, where he taught Christian education for 31 years, emphasizing in all of his classes that learning must begin and end in the Scriptures.

John Van Meerbeke described Schauffele’s legacy with these words in the New Horizons: “Throughout their fifty years of marriage, he and his wife Ruth were heavily involved in the establishment of ministries in church planting, foreign missions, nursing homes, Vacation Bible schools, Sunday schools and their curricula, and seminaries. But many will recall Charles and Ruth Schauffele’s commitment to educating Christian children as to their heavenly citizenship (Phil 3:20).”

Charles Schauffele passed away on October 24, 1989, and Ruth died on June 16, 2010 at the age of 100.
