August 1 Today in OPC History

George and Fumi Uomoto

A letter, dated August 1, 1957, from George and Fumi Uomoto, OPC missionaries in Japan, was circulating in Orthodox Presbyterian congregations in preparation for the Uomotos’ return on furlough. The Uomotos wrote: “We sail August 28 for Seattle. Lois and Calvin are eagerly waiting to do some roller skating and to eat ice cream sodas … We are already looking forward to seeing many of our congregations and friends. Pray for Mr. Nakajima, who will fill in during our absence. He is so young and inexperienced, being just out of Seminary in Kobe … We are glad that one of the elders and his family of six children in the Sendai church will transfer their membership here, as it means so much to have staunch Christians shoulder the burden too.”

Blessed with eleven children, George and Fumi would labor in Japan for an additional 31 years until their retirement in 1988. When George went to be with the Lord in 2004, they had been married 57 years. Fumi went to be with the Lord in 2015.
