Twilight: Jesus Is the Way

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

In March we read the gospel of John. John wrote his gospel so that his readers would know and believe the claims of Jesus. Those who do have everlasting life here and now.

Bible Reading:

John 14:1–7

Bible Text:

Jesus answered, "1 am the way and the truth and the life" (John 14:6).

Devotional:

"I am going to my Father's house," said Jesus. "When everything is ready, you may live there with me. We have plenty of rooms, and you know the way."

"But we don't even know where you are going! How can we know the way?" asked a bewildered Thomas.

"I am the way," said Jesus.

And we believe this "I am" statement with all our hearts.

All humanity is trying to reach God, the Father of us all. Sages continue to give advice. You must take a course in transcendental meditation, they say. You must follow the sevenfold path, they teach. You must begin by getting in touch with your inner self, they advise.

But Jesus does not merely show the way; he is the way. When we seek the God of the universe, it is more important who we know than what we know. If we know Jesus, we know the way.

"I am ... the truth." Does that mean that all wisdom preserved in ancient scrolls is false? No, but it does mean that God's truth and light have been revealed to us in Jesus. Therefore, if we have studied all sources of wisdom but don't know Jesus, we are still ignorant.

If we know Jesus, we are no longer lost, for Jesus is the way. We don't live by fairy tales, for he is the truth. And death has no power over us, for he is the life. The life of God is in Jesus.
