Living Bible Overture

2023

On February 10, 1975, the Presbytery of New York and New England overtured the Forty- Second General Assembly of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church to instruct its standing Committee on Christian Education to desist from using the paraphrase known as THE LIVING BIBLE in its publications. The Presbytery maintained that THE LIVING BIBLE was not only an acknowledged paraphrase, but also that it could open the door to some erroneous doctrinal views based on its Arminianism bias.

The overture would come under consideration of the Forty-Second Assembly meeting at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, later that year on June 2. The Assembly judged that it would be unwise for the Assembly to proscribe the use of any version, translation, or paraphrase of the Scriptures on the part of any agency or subdivision of the church. It also directed the CCE to exercise extreme care in quoting from any translation or paraphrase, always seeking to use the one which most suitably renders the original.
