On this date in 2002, the Sixty-Ninth General Assembly, meeting on the campus of Gordon College on the picturesque North Shore of Boston, concluded its business. Throughout the Assembly, Rusty Copeland, ruling elder at nearby First Presbyterian Church in Ipswich, regaled commissioners with his Yankee hospitality as he oversaw local arrangements. Moderated by Doug Clawson, who was days away from assuming his new post as Associate General Secretary for the Committee on Foreign Missions, the Assembly was a time of noteworthy transitions. An evening reception marked the retirement of OPC missionaries Dr. Grietje Rietkerk and Dr. and Mrs. Young Son. Later in its proceedings the Assembly honored John Galbraith with a resolution of appreciation as he brought 21 years of service on the Committee on Ecumenicity and Interchurch Relations to an end.
