On this date in 1996, Lake Sherwood OPC, Orlando, Florida announced the winners in its annual Scripture memory contest. Twenty-three participants in the contest memorized one hundred verses of Scripture. Seven participants memorized fifty designated verses of Scripture. Verses were recited weekly and had to be repeated in two recitations for the competition.
Scholarships of $100 for the Southland Bible Conference, a summer youth camp sponsored by the OPC and PCA, were awarded to elementary and high school students. Those unable to attend were awarded a $50 Christian book store certificate.
Those who recited one hundred verses were: Deanne Adams, Rob Adams, Crystal Carson, Rick Carson, Paul Hearn, Andrea Hill, Betsy Keller, Katie Keller, Jamie Middleton, Abigail Mininger, April Mininger, Jenna Owens, Amy Roebke, Jason Roebke, Nicholas Roebke, Dave Scott, Nancy Treible, Nathan Treible, Marcy VanderJagt, Yvonne VanderJagt, Theresa VanderJagt, Ramsey Adams, and John Hearn.
Those who recited fifty designated verses were: Kimberly Adams, Jeff Hill, Shawn Hill, Tim Muether, Joy Muether, Matthew Treible, and Debbie Adams.
Lake Sherwood has sponsored this contest for over thirty years. Students who have participated through the nine-year cycle memorized 900 Bible verses, the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Westminster Shorter Catechism. Awards have been also been applied to mission trip expenses and Christian college tuition.
