November 7 Today in OPC History

Robley Johnston

On November 7, 1955, Mr. Robley Johnston accepted the call of the Christian Education Committee to serve as its General Secretary. Ordained in 1951 to the gospel ministry, Johnston served as pastor of First OPC, Cincinnati for one year and then Calvary OPC, Middletown, Pa., for two years before taking up the position with the CCE.

Johnston would lead the Committee in the development of a full Sunday School curriculum, a project that would last twelve years until its completion to wide praise in the church in 1972. In 1975, he was instrumental in bringing together the OPC and PCA to form a partnership in Great Commission Publications and served as its Executive Director until 1979. That same year, Johnston both retired and left the OPC, his name erased from the roll of the Presbytery of Philadelphia on November 17, 1979. He died outside the church on May 18, 2008.
